Edinburgh Napier joins Turing University Network
Edinburgh Napier has joined a group of universities set up by the UK’s institute for data science and artificial intelligence – in a joint effort to apply world-class research to national and global challenges.
Set up by the Alan Turing Institute in April 2023, the Turing University Network offers members the opportunity to collaborate in finding solutions, building skills for the future, and driving an informed public conversation around data science and AI.
From a founding group of 36, Edinburgh Napier is among 29 new inductees, taking the total membership to 65. As a member, ENU will have the opportunity to engage with the world-leading Institute, and influence its schemes, initiatives and direction.
Professor Nick Antonopoulos, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal of Research & Innovation at Edinburgh Napier University, said: “I am delighted to see Edinburgh Napier join this ambitious and growing network of universities.
“This is a significant achievement and an endorsement of ENU’s forward-thinking work in data science and AI.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with fellow members and contributing our expertise to address the sector’s opportunities and challenges."
Professor Amir Hussain, the Turing Academic Liaison, said: "Joining the Turing University Network is highly opportune.
“Membership of the thriving network will provide access to the wider community, accelerating our research plans. Targeted areas include a focus on development and use of trustworthy and ethical AI to improve the quality and sustainability of healthcare, environment, and communities.
"Over the first two years, our plans include working closely with colleagues to lead diverse and inclusive teams across our Schools and research centres. This will lead to advancing an engaged community at all career stages working in AI and data science across the University.
"We will actively participate in Turing Network engagement activities and utilise the Network as a springboard for sustainable collaboration and partnerships."
Dr Jean Innes, Chief Executive Officer of The Alan Turing Institute, said: “We’re really pleased to welcome our new members to the network.
“We hope that they will benefit from being part of our data science and AI group and find opportunities for new, meaningful collaborations across the data science and AI landscape.”
